Another Year

So, today is my birthday.  I guess this is the time that I’m supposed to look back at the last year and figure out something from it.

Here are some of the highlights:

  1. I saw my baby sister become a mom.  I am so proud to be a mama to Deven.  I guess my uncle/cousin Neeraj was right when he said that that relationship is pretty special.  I just need to figure out how to make it Chicago more often to see him…and my sister and brother-in-law, of course (they aren’t that important :-)
  2. I adopted a dog from the Denver Dumb Friends League.  Kai has been a wonderful addition to my life, even when I get annoyed at him for tracking mud in the house or chewing one of my shoes.  It’s just crazy how attached I’ve become to him and how I miss him when he’s not around.
  3. I spent countless hours toiling away outside of house working on the landscaping.  It’s one of the reasons I wanted to be a homeowner.  I actually enjoy that kind of thing, even if it has taken me many months to get things done.  It would have taken longer if I didn’t have help from my parents when they came and visited.  I’m not 100% there yet, but it’s definitely in a shape that I will be able to enjoy for many years to come.  I’m pretty proud of the work that I’ve put into it.
  4. I started putting a lot more effort into volunteering and other charitable causes.  In the past, I would talk about it, but this time, I actually am now a volunteer at the Children’s Hospital and have done stuff for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.  That has made me feel like a better person that I’m helping others.

It was a really positive year I think overall.  Maybe closer to the end than at the beginning, I feel like there’s a lot more momentum.

Socially: I’m definitely more active that I have been. I’ve met some really good people that are fun to hang out with, like the Michigan Alumni group, Red Wings Meetup group, Euchre meetup group, the Ski and Snowboard meetup group, the indian meetup and mixer groups, my kickball team.  While I can’t say that I’ve made the closest of friends yet, it’s getting there.

Dating: My ex definitely set the bar pretty damn low, so there’s no where to go but up.  I’m definitely meeting so many better people now.  I decided to open myself up to meeting anyone, not just Indians.  Nothing has stuck so far.  I’m pretty patient, and I’m not going to rush into a relationship just because…otherwise I end up with someone like my ex.  I know that things will happen.  In the meantime, I’ll have fun.

Work: I’ll admit that in the last year, I’ve been in cruise-control.  Definitely coasting.  On one hand, it was good because I was able to do a lot of things that I wouldn’t have been able to do.  On the other hand, there’s some momentum to get back to the same level of productivity that has been my reputation.  Nothing yet set in stone.  It is Oracle and I have to deal with the slowness here.  But, the desire to advance is there once again.

Health: I don’t know what to say here.  I really feel like things are a little mixed.  While working outside, I think I burned a lot of calories.  But I made that up by not cooking and eating more crap from outside.  For the upcoming year, I will be joining Team-in-Training (injury permitting), which will help me get in shape again (and of course, helping me raising money for LLS).  I always feel like there’s a struggle here, and I just need to keep figuring out how to get that push so I’m not slacking off.

I guess I don’t feel like I have too much insightful stuff to talk about.  I definitely feel old and there’s alot of pressure that comes with age, but I’ll deal with it.  I’ve dealt with worse.  Most people try to come up with goals.  I’ve tried that it with mixed results so I won’t bother trying to set goals this time.  I think that I just want to keep the momentum going and finish up the calendar year with a bang.

Costa Rica – Day 7: Tamarindo

Today is the last full day in Costa Rica.  We are still in Tamarindo, and will be driving back to San Jose right after we check out.  It’s another beautiful day, but we got a long drive back.

We made it back to San Jose…safely.  I think that Kapil pee’d his pants because of some of the close calls that Sahil had when driving back. Yeah…not so great.  The weather changed to rainy so, that didn’t help. And to top that we stopped at a Burger King for a chicken sandwich that hit the spot.  Once back in San Jose, we needed to figure out what to do because all of our flights are early in the next morning.  Originally, we planned to just stay up all night.  But we ended up getting a hotel so we can put our luggage somewhere.  We had returned the car as well.

Of course, I cannot sleep if there’s a casino near by.  So, while Kapil decided to wuss out and sleep, Sahil and I hit the casino.  Of course, we didn’t do too well, but that’s alright.  We just hung out for a while and had more drinks.

After we killed enough time, we went back to the hotel.  I got ready because I was the first to leave.

And that’s it…trip over.  Not too exciting of an end.  But it was a fun and relatively inexpensive trip.  Gotta love the fact that Costa Rica is only a five hour flight from Denver.

Costa Rica – Day 6: Tamarindo

Today, we ended up hanging out on the water.  We met up with Capt Jean who was going to take us on his fishing boat, for four hours.  We attempted first to catch some fish.  I wasn’t too impressed because I thought we would be more hands on.  It actually felt like he did the work and we just watched.  We weren’t doing that for much longer because we also had wanted to go snorkling as well.  This of course was in a different area, so we had to get there, which took some time.  And we ended up snorkling for a half hour, and it wasn’t that great.  I think it would have been better to just do the fishing and not try to do everything all at once. But at least it was good to be on the ocean.

In the evening we just hung out at the bar and went to a local place for a pizza.  Not that exciting.

Costa Rica – Day 5: Tamarindo

We moved to Tamarindo for the last couple of days of our trip.  Tamarindo is a beach town on the west coast.  It is a lot more developed and definitely caters to the tourists.  It reminds me of surfer towns in California.

Unfortunately, being at the beach for a couple of days isn’t very appealing, especially when it’s not the spring break like atmosphere.  I don’t really enjoy the beach as a type of place to “find” myself.  I do much better when I’m active.  This place is full of couples and families. So, it is a different dynamic here.  The night we got here, there was a wedding.  Nice wedding, but didn’t really need to see it.

It’s good to be relaxing.  I’m not really thinking about work and stuff like that.  But my mind is constantly running and thinking about relationships.  I do miss the interaction with someone.  It’s just tough because I miss the fun and exciting stuff.

On odd thing is that I don’t feel much different here.  I think it’s because I was in a different state of mind before leaving for the trip.  I was already relaxed and work was a little slow.  I was a little bit unfocused before and now I feel the same.

I’m actually looking forward to being home.  Well, I’m definitely anxious to see my nephew.  I cannot believe that my baby sister is a mom.  So, I’m looking forward to seeing him on Saturday after I get back.

It’s a little funny traveling with these guys.  On one hand, you dealing with kid in a candy store who finds everything so amazing.  On the other hand you have someone who is more like the person out of college, who’s just out to have fun.  I’m definitely in the middle.  I want to have fun and meet a lot of people, but I do want to get back into a meaningful relationship.  Not just any relationship.

Back to Tamarindo.  It hasn’t been eventful.  The first day, we just hung out and drank at the bar.  We then ended up a local club across the street called Aqua.  We met two women who didn’t speak a word of English, but convinced them to teach us how to dance.  We were definitely drunk because they did look better that night than they did during the day, when we ran into them on the street.  Anyways, it was a fun night, but surprisingly, I wasn’t as hungover like the rest of the guys.  Maybe I just have a higher tolerance now.  And I usually stick with beer which slows down my drinking.

The next day, it was pretty rainy so we didn’t do anything really.  That was good because we had been up all night the night before.  Eventually, we drove out to Conchal, which is a pretty nice beach near by.  The skies has cleared up enough to see the sunset.  Again, it was fun, but not anything special.

We got back to the hotel where we ended up at the bar again.  We met someone who happened to be eating by herself and invited her to play euchre.  I had to teach everyone how to play, and it didn’t help that Kapil was my partner.  He was still drunk from the night before.

Afterwards, we had dinner at a local place on the beach.  Our waitress was definitely high.  At least the food was much better.

By the time we got back to the hotel, it was late and even the bar had closed.

Costa Rica – Day 3: Arenal

Today started like yesterday, with a pretty easy breakfast.  We ran into our new friend Priscilla, who had changed her mind about leaving the area yesterday.  So, today we invited her to hang out with us.

Our goal was to do the zip line, and pretty much the primary goal of the trip for me.  It was a blast.  Seven stages, some about 200 meters high over the forest, some traveling up to 45 mph.  That was awesome.  Each stage began with the heart pounding, but each stage had breathtaking views.  I didn’t close my eyes and enjoyed the ride.  This definitely made the trip for me.

Costa Rica – Day 2: Arenal

Today was a pretty chil day.  We started the day with breakfast where we ended up meeting Priscilla from San Diego.  This just added a new dynamic to the conversation, so that was pretty cool.

After breakfast, Kapil, Sahil, and I went down to La Fortuna for an ATV tour.  It was a lot of fun, although it wasn’t very muddy, which would have made it worth it.  At one point, we stopped at a local swimming hole where a lot of locals hang out and jump into the water using swing rope.  Of course, we did the same.  That was fun.  We proceeded to an overlook of the water fall, which was pretty nice.  The tour ended with a lunch at a local place.  Nothing fancy…and not that great of food.  Every thing I’ve read about this place has said Costa Rica wasn’t really a place for foodies.

After ATV’ing, we we to the Tobacon to hang out in the hot springs  The water was great, and we had plenty of drinks.  But at this point, I’m starting to realize that this trip would have been better if there were women in the group.  This is not the type of place for a group of guys, especially since there aren’t too many people here.  It’s definitely not like spring break here, which is almost the atmosphere I would like at this point…to have some more fun.

We pretty much spent the rest of the day at the Tobacon, drinking, and finishing off by having dinner there.  It wasn’t impressive, since it was Middle Eastern night.  Where is the native food?

Costa Rica – Day 1: Arenal

The trip to Costa Rica has officially begun.  I’m at the airport now waiting for the flight to board.  Had my customary shot of Jaegar and a beer.  It’s definitely not a vacation without that.  I’m psyched to be going on a vacation again.

I’ve landed in San Jose.  The airport is small and, being so early, clearing customs was really quick.  Of course, I’m here pretty early, and I have a while to wait for the rest of the crew to show up.  So, I’ve ventured out the a Denny’s near the airport.  I’ve realized how little I’ve prepared to be in this Spanish-speaking country.  I don’t even have a Spanish-English dictionary, especially since I’ve already encountered people who don’t speak English well.  I didn’t even bother to learn anything about the country before I got here.  I don’t even know the exchange rate!  It may have been a good idea to pick an iPhone app or two.  Luckily, this Denny’s has WiFi, meaning I don’t have to pay for international roaming/data service.  So, I downloaded a few apps just like that.  Gotta love that.  I also just realized that I may be able to make a few calls for free using Skype.  Of course, that depends on a reliable connection. Anyways, I don’t really plan on being connected to the outside world too much during this trip.  This trip is all about relaxing and clearing the min and to be inspired.  Once I get back, I have a lot of personal things still left to do, and I need to get focusted.  So, that’s what I hope to regain during this trip.  Now, I just have to wait for these fools to get in.  Still have three hours to go.

I got back to the airport and met up with Sahil.   We had to wait for Kapil so we ended up getting the rental car squared away and did a little exploring.  Finally, Kapil’s plane shows up and we’re off to Arenal.  Took us a couple of house to get there.  The roads weren’t as bad as I expected (like Peru), but had plenty of stops, one-lane roads, small towns on the way.

We made it to the Arenal Lodge, after a 3 km steep drive from the entrance.  We had wanted to stay the Tobacon, but was little more expensive than we wanted.  So, we ended up at this place, and it’s not too bad.   Our room has a great view of the volcano, although the cloud cover isn’t helping today.

We grabbed some food at the restaurant thinking we’d just eat quickly and then hit the hotsprings at the Tobacon, but then we found out that it was $45 to get in.  We decided it wasn’t worth the effort for a couple of hours.  So, we decided to chill, especially since we were pretty tired anyways.  One cool thing we got to do was to get one of the two parrots to stand on our arms.  We got the pics to prove it.

Another Inconvenience

On Saturday, a friend and I went up to Vail to do some snowboarding/skiing.  The conditions weren’t very good.  It was really cold, windy, icy.  Visibility was not very good.  But we pushed through to get a decent day in.  As normal, we were done by 2:30 and ready to head back to Denver.  And so we thought we’d be back by the evening.  Instead, it ended up being pretty inconvenient.

I was driving and the weather wasn’t so great.  At some point, a semi-truck changed lanes and caused chaos.  One car tried to stop and hit the truck.  This caused everyone else to freak out.  I was going with the flow of traffic, which wasn’t that fast to begin with.  I also started breaking, but my car hit some ice and skidded.  I wasn’t stopping and it looked like I was going to hit the car in front of me.  So, my first instinct was to look for a way to swerve and minimize the damage.  I was in the left lane so I moved right in the middle of the lane thinking that maybe that I can squeeze between two cars.  But as I was going through that, my friend was yelling “Go right” as in trying to go all the way right to the right most shoulder.  The right lane had more room as well, so there was a possibility that we could slow down.  But, I kept skidding.  And I wasn’t going to make it to the shoulder.  The minivan in front of me never saw me coming.

Bam, hit the minivan square in the back.   First things first, no one was hurt.  Thank god for that.  But the damage was done.  The back of the minivan was completely smashed in and the spare tire from the bottom of the minivan fell out.  The back window was completely gone.  My car, actually, wasn’t as damaged as much as one would expect.  The Subaru Outback is a solid car and it has a high suspension.  So, my bumper was messed up and the hood caved in.  But the air bags did not deploy and no damage was near.

Immediately, there was a tow truck near us, directing us on what to do and pulling us on the bed.  A state trooper came took my information.  I got a frickin ticket because he said that I should have been going slower because of the conditions.  The whole process took forever.  It took two hours just to get from the accident site to gas station where the car was dropped off.  Apparently, we weren’t the only the ones in accidents that day.  It was pretty chaotic at the gas station, which was now a tow lot.  My car was not drivable so, the car was going to have to stay at the station.  Our best option was to get the insurance company take care of the towing.  All we needed to do was figure out how to get home.

Unfortunately, being 120 miles away from Denver, we had no viable way back home.  No shuttles were available.  A cab ride would be almost $500.  We don’t know anyone going back from the area.  So, the only solution was to find a place to stay for the night.  My friend took care of that and found us a place to stay.  Of course, it wasn’t exactly close.  So, we needed to walk to a bus stop and take a 20 minute ride to Avon where the hotel was.  Of course, we missed the bus by 10 seconds, so we had to wait another 30 minutes for the next one.  Luckily, there was a Safeway next door, where we could hang out until we caught the bus.  We took the bus to the Avon stop and then had to walk from there to the hotel.

We did go grab a bite to eat and a beer.  Definitely needed it.   At least we could get a nights sleep and catch the shuttle in the morning.  We were exhausted.  It didn’t help that we lost an hour due to the time change.

So, we caught a CME shuttle in the morning.  Of course, they couldn’t drop us off where we wanted to go, but only at DIA.  And since we were the first people picked up, we had to wait through all of the other passengers getting picked up…that just added an extra hour to our time.  We finally got to DIA, where my friend’s dad picked us up and took us back to my house.  Basically didn’t get home until 2:30pm.  A long day.

It just felt like and inconvenience more than anything.  Everything went so fast at the time of the accident, and noone was hurt.  So, this whole thing has just become an inconvenience.  Just another thing to deal with now.

One year anniversary

One year ago today, I was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma.  I guess I’m supposed to mark this occasion with some sort of celebration.  Well, it’s been a pretty crazy year, so it’s a little hard to really celebrate.  Looking purely at the events that were cancer related, I guess it wasn’t too bad.  Within six months of being diagnosed, I was in remission.  A blink of an eye, really.  So, I don’t really know how much I really feel like celebrating.  Maybe I’ll have a beer.

I know that it could be worse, and I have seen worse.  So, I feel fortunate.  I AM A SURVIOR.

Resolutions Update

So, a month ago, I wrote about my resolutions for the year.  So, how’s that going for me?  Well, it’s not been so smooth as I had hoped.  It always seems that something gets in the way.

The first thing that distracted me was a home improvement project I decided to take on.  I bought some new bedroom furniture, and I decided to paint my bedroom before the furniture arrived.  But, of course, I didn’t make it that simple.  One of the things I hate about my house is how thick and sloppy the paint looks on all of the trim.  So, I decided to try to strip the paint off of the trim.  That turned out to be much harder than I expected, especially since this was my first time doing it, and I was dealing with removing about 4-5 layers of paint.  In the end, it took up two weeks of my time and I ended up giving up on trying to salvage the the trim.  That was majorly disappointing because I wanted to keep the original trim, but it looks like that isn’t really going to happen.  And what makes it worse is that it’s impossible to find stock trim that looks like the existing one, meaning that it would have to be custom.  Ok…long story short, I am going to modernize the trim throughout the house.  I did end up painting the room, but I still have to do the trim.  I decided to wait for my parents to show up to help me with that, since I’ve never done that before.  I still have a lot left to do.

So, where does that leave me now?  I have only lost a couple of pounds so far.  I cut out most of my soda intake.  I don’t drink as much beer anymore.  My diet is much better.  I did join a gym, and I actually do go, except for the time I was working on my room.   I haven’t done any yoga yet.  I’m getting involved with some of the classes at the gym, but I haven’t really done the yoga ones yet.  It’s slow, but I still think I can make the goal of 20 pounds by June.

I’ve only been to the mountains once in the last month.  There’s plenty of time still though.  And it’s so easy to get up there.  Leave at 6am, get a good five hours of snowboarding, then be home by 4pm.  That’s not bad.

I haven’t gone anywhere yet, but there are some plans in the works for some upcoming travels.  I really want to get a karma trip in there sometime soon.  What I mean by a karma trip is to go somewhere and volunteer.  Building up the karma.

So, that’s pretty much it.  I still have a ways to go, but I am in a better position than I was before.
